9 Things You Need to Know About Getting Paid to Speak

9 Things You Need to Know About Getting Paid to Speak When I first published How to Write a KILLER LinkedIn Profile, I had big dreams of becoming a sought-after keynote speaker. Some part of me thought that just because my book was a best-seller on Amazon, speaking opportunities would be knocking down my doors. I had a magic number in my head for my speaker fee: $2,000 plus travel. It didn’t take long for me to get an inquiry from a national organization, to whom I quoted $2,000 plus travel. They didn’t blink at the price, but they decided my topic was not right for their needs. I was inundated with other speaking offers â€" albeit mostly free ones. I accepted them. I spoke for free for women’s organizations, educational institutions, and local networking groups. I traveled to California to speak at a Connect â€" Work â€" Thrive conference. I did radio and TV appearances, and was interviewed for several BlogTalkRadio spots. After a couple of years, I started getting more offers to speak for pay. I received $500 for a webinar, $350 for a talk for a local networking group, and $1,500 for three appearances at Project Management Institute meetings in Wisconsin. I was granted 100% of the entrance fees when I spoke at the Yale Club in Chicago, and a percentage of the fees paid when I presented for The National Resume Writers’ Association. Things were looking up. The idea with giving presentations, whether free or paid, is that you get access to potential clients. But I was not getting clients, even when I spoke to audiences theoretically comprised of my target market. Still, I kept speaking, and holding out for paid opportunities. Finally, a breakthrough happened. I was asked to speak at a software company in Madison, and they agreed to pay me close to $2,000 for a 2-hour workshop, plus an additional amount for individual coaching of their staff. Shortly following that win, I was asked for a proposal by a business school on the east coast. I submitted it, and was granted â€" at long last â€" $2,000 plus travel expenses! How I reached this milestone is a complex story. I wasn’t even clear about how I did it until I attended a webinar by Denise Hedges, presented for Career Thought Leaders. Here’s what I learned, both through my own experiences and through the webinar, about how to make money as a speaker: 1. Become an author. This one is obvious isn’t it? Right or wrong, authors are considered authorities on the topic they write about. If you can become a best-selling author, even better. I have no doubt that having written How to Write a KILLER LinkedIn Profile is responsible for much of the interest in me as a speaker. Writing content for a blog helps too, as does creating a monthly or quarterly newsletter. Build an audience through your writing and you are more likely to attract an audience who wants to see you live. 2. Market yourself confidently as a speaker. I realized early on that if I were going to get paid to speak, I had better have a great head shot. I believe my new head shot, a vast improvement over the home-made one I had used previously, made a difference in the interest level for my services. In addition, once you reach a certain point, create a speaker brochure that includes topics you can speak about, pictures of you speaking, where you have spoken before, enthusiastic testimonials, and a persuasive bio about you as a speaker. It took me years to do this, and once I did I was able to send it to the university who hired me for $2,000. I don’t know what would have happened if I had not had that brochure to promote myself. Finally, show up professionally when you get an inquiry. Over time, I learned what questions to ask to make it clear I know what I’m doing: What is the organization’s budget if any? How big is the audience? Who will be in the audience and what are their goals? How long is the presentation? Who will pay for my travel? Who will pay for printing any materials I want to distribute? Do I need a parking pass? Asking these questions demonstrates that you are experienced and in control of the situation. You will command respect. 3. Say yes. Before I got the paid speaking engagements I so desired, I said yes to a lot of unpaid opportunities. Through those events, I became a better speaker and garnered testimonials and photographs to use in my brochure (see #2). I built credibility so that more prestigious organizations would ask me to speak. Notice I said I garnered testimonials. Yes, I asked for them! Testimonials don’t often drop in your lap. But many people will be happy to write them when you ask. Also, you never know who might be in attendance at one of your presentations. I have had attendees at a free talk connect me with future paid opportunities. 4. Choose a punchy title and write an effective program description. In your session title, describe what you’re going to speak about. Don’t be cryptic. Keep the title short â€" and add a subtitle if appropriate. Most important, don’t promise something and then not deliver! You want people to be satisfied that you gave them what they expected (and more). For the description promoting your session, write a paragraph or two about the problem and the solution you will provide, then list 3-5 takeaways of what the audience will get from the presentation. Here’s Denise’s well-crafted title: Build Your Business By Speaking:  What They’re Not Telling You About How to Get Started And here’s one of my upcoming session titles: The Human Guinea Pig: How to Put Personality into LinkedIn Profiles 5. Capture their attention Always start your presentations with a story! Personal stories are relatable and create likability and trust. Then tell them your objective and what they can expect to learn during the time you’re together. Set expectations not just for what you’ll be saying, but also for when they will be able to ask questions. These practices will create an attentive audience who is not distracted with wondering why you’re saying what you’re saying or when they will get to ask their questions. 6. Address the concerns of your audience. I often ask the organizer of an event ahead of time to collect questions from people who will be attending my presentation. That way I have an understanding of their needs and can craft my material accordingly. I tailor what I’m saying to the group to make sure I provide value. I don’t hold back. I provide as much value as I can provide in 45 minutes. It never works to look like you’re trying to sell something. I reserve just the last two minutes for an offer. 7. Give something valuable to your audience. Denise Hedges recommends making an offer to your audience for a complimentary consultation. If you do this right, you can get a 10-20% response from your audience, and about half of them will hire you after the consultation. I’ll admit that while I’ve sold a fair number of books after my presentations, I have not been successful in obtaining many clients from my speaking engagements. I have made offers to attendees, but based on the low response I’ve gotten, those offers have not been attractive enough to create interest. I am going to follow the advice I got from Denise from now on! Here’s what she recommends for the offer portion of your speech: Make it flow seamlessly Offer a complimentary session â€" talk about what difference your services can make for them Directly address the people in the room who are ready to take action. Tell them if they want certain results, you want to talk to them. 8. Watch your body language. Remember, 93% of your effectiveness is in your NON-VERBAL communication. Make sure you look good, aren’t fidgeting, make eye contact with the audience, and speak in a conversational manner devoid of “ums” and “uhs.” 9. Practice! How do you get to Carnegie Hall? You practice. While you can practice in front of actual audiences, it’s much less risky to mess up and tune up by speaking to friends and family, or in front of a video recording device, so you can see what you look like and how you sound. As painful as that can be, it’s more painful to get negative feedback during your real speeches. Do you have more tips for successfully turning speaking engagements into income streams? Please share below!

The Old Myths And The Views Compared To Todays Myths And Views - 1375 Words

The Old Myths And The Views Compared To Today's Myths And Views (Essay Sample) Content: Name Instructor: Course Date New Myths, New Future The power of an individual’s opportunity and gender in the United States has had a very strong effect on society for a long time in our history such that they have been held responsible for shaping our morals and the way we behave for centuries. The outcomes of these myths, however, are not necessarily agreeable or positive. With time people start doubting the myths as a result of â€Å"disillusionment† and questions arise: is the United States really a land of freedom with equal opportunities distribution? Should gender of be used to define an individual? The aim of this paper is to answer the above questions through analyzing ancient myths through conducting a â€Å"thought experiment† and transforming the myths to be more realistic and visualize how they could affect us and what they might tell of our future. In a bid to come up with new myths, there should be a need for one, and this needs us to understand the old ones and have a reason to change them. Looking at the myth of opportunity, based on the picture created in movies that United States is an ideal land of freedom and equality, every person is equally entitled to be successful no matter of their socio-economic status, therefore no individual â€Å" is guaranteed to success or doomed to failure† (Colombo 243). Gender myths bring out a clear difference between men and women, for example, women’s definition is based on her purity, housekeeping ability, and her ability to comply with the man while, all men should be â€Å"emotionally controlled, powerful, and successful† (Colombo 277). It is clearly evident that these myths are somewhat justifiable. For example, the individual opportunity myth appreciates an individual’s dream for success, effort and informed decisions should be appreciated. This has been an inspiration to generations to pursue success and pleasure which is now part of American identity. The disadvantages though are more than the advantages leading to erosion of morals and blinding people not to see it as is. For example, the experience when the black girl and her friends in â€Å"The lesson† are taken to F.A.O and find the toys in Schwartz Toy Shop and find the toys unaffordable show us how unfair the socio-economic status makes life (Bambara 253). This shows how it can make a difference in a child’s life not only being unable to afford better toys but also lead a better life. A journalist Barbara Ehrenreich wrote in her article â€Å"Serving in Florida† about how it is to be a waitress and housekeeper and living on minimum wage. Her scenario is a clear painting of the life and working conditions of a low income individual who works in poor conditions under low salary â€Å"for six to eight hours in a row, never sit except for pee† (Ehrenreich 268). From this article it is evident that the low income class, illegal, uneducated, or people whose native language is not English form the large part of the society. These two cases show how disadvantaged you class, race, family and education level among other aspects we cannot control can reduce the chance to land a better job. Myths however put these people to blame for their lazy nature and lack of ambition where else the poor power distribution and advantage rarely is mentioned publicly. Myths lead to misconceptions by the society regarding is normal, restricting one’s ability to accept or make a change. In Jean Killbourne’s â€Å"Two Ways a Woman Can Get Hurt: Advertising and Violence† he writes about gender perception can be altered involuntarily through media to show contents rich in sex and phonographic materials and concealed information which was all in front of them always (Killbourne 420). Many advertisements portray women as objects and sexual thus making them an easy target and submissive who have to be subjects to men. Such advertisements have a small effect by their own but lead individuals to making assumptions based on gender collectively- women are always inferior to men and men are unemotional and not committed in relationships. In Michael Kimmel’s â€Å"Bros Before Hos: The Guy Code† shows how men experience the society’s description of manhood and masculinity from a tender age (Kimmel 461). In connection to real life, this information is encouraged by male figure in both society and family through their remarks and dictation, which makes men refuse to ask for help as this belittle their manhood status. From Kimmel and Killbourne’s works we are able to see the aspects of gender as womanhood, manhood, masculinity and femininity as well as victimization of both genders as depicted by the myths. After looking at the negative side of the old myths, the question is how to change peoples’ mentality to harmonize this with the diversity and society’s inequality. We are going to conduct the thought experiment through construction of new myths and see their effects. We start with the individual opportunity myth and the new myth will encompass various aspects that impact our professional achievement: the idea of equal opportunity is non-existent not even in America. All factors including hard work, family, education, culture, race, gender, sexual orientation, self-presentation, physical appearance and fortune all are important in one’s opportunity to success. Success thus, is a matter of how hard you work. This new myth is not as assuring or colorful as the old one therefore acknowledging inequality would make us know and realize that could let us exercise authority and influence to ourselves and others. This will help in help in approach injustice openly and with honesty instead of being ignorant about policy makers, social media, celebrities or hiding injustices. With public awareness resurgence, the push and cry for social change would be a public affair not just for the minority or activists. Nancy Kranich, the president of American Library Association said: â€Å"In order to maximize opportunities for access experienced by certain groups, a good society commits resources in order to level the playing field† (â€Å"Equality and Equity of Access†). This indicates that action should be taken like schools should offer English as a second language and foundations give scholarships to students from poor backgrounds. The myth of classifying people based on background, econ omic status and race should be a clichà © and not blame it on ...

Logical Structure or Theoretical Framework - 2746 Words

Logical Structure or Theoretical Framework Problems do not exist in nature but in the minds of people. This can be seen from an examination of the definition of problem: problems stem from the juxtaposition of factors which results in a perplexing or enigmatic state of mind (a cognitive problem), an undesirable consequence (a psychological or value problem), or a conflict which obscures the appropriate course of action (a practical problem). Cognitions, values and practices are attributes of persons, not the objective world (whatever that is). Problems cannot be articulated except within a conceptual system. Perhaps most important is the impact of the explicit theoretical structure on subsequent inquiry in the same area. The investigation no longer hangs loose but becomes part of a line or tradition of inquiry which other researchers can check, replicate or build upon. Knowledge growth in a field becomes an additive phenomenon of increasingly useful structures or concepts with which inquirers can work. 5. Without a clear explication of the problem and a workable perspective with which to view it, it is likely that the research project will be flawed by uncontrolled extraneous variables, overlooked variables, faulty instruments, haphazard procedures and the like. After she finished college is when she really started her writing. While she was in school is enjoyed it and made she is would finish on top. Schooling was very important to her when she finally went back. All of Dickinsons teachers knew that she had so much potential and knew that should could go far and had a huge desire to succeed. As Dickinson got older she got better about getting out of the house. Dickinson never got married or had any children that was just something she was not into. She never thought having kids was really for her. Dickinson did help out a lot with her nieces and nephews she loved be able to watch them grow up. As she grew older she spent a lot of time at her brothers house because her best friend married her brother. As Dickinson began to get older she ended up getting kidney disease at age 55 and it killed her. Her death was a big impact on her family and the world. Dickinson inspired many of the time in America. She was also one of the most famous early female poets ever which added to the womens rights movement. Dickinson had a very driven mind. She had her heart on something and wasnt letting it go till it was complete. Some of her poems reflect on her loneliness and sadness. She went through a lot of hard times in her life but she always reflected it back on her writing. She never let anyone know she was hurting or suffering till she wrote about it. Dickinson started writing at a very young age and thats the reason she had such a big drive for it. Some of the poems Dickinson wrote were Hope is the thing with feathers, I felt a Funeral, in my Brain, Tell all the truth but tell it slant. You can tell by the name of the titles that she writes about special events or something that has impacted her in many ways. Dickinson always wrote things that other people could relate to. People could always read her poems are relate to things that are going on in there life. Looking through some of these poems I can see where I can relate to certain things in them. Even after Dickinson passed away her best friend made sure her work didnt go away. The poems that she hadnt totally finished were still published. My opinion on Emily Dickinson is that she seemed like a very hard worker and if she set her mind to something she made sure it got done and that it was successful. It is amazing to me that she kept her feelings in till and not express herself till she wrote her poems. She was very independent person and always wanted to do better. She always made her writing stick out where people wanted to read it. You could tell that she wanted people to look up to her and wanted to be known as someone people looked up to and wanna be known as someone that and changed things for the better. One of my favorite quotes from Emily was Saying nothing sometimes says the most. This quote to me means that silence can have more of a meaning than words. You should not always have to say something for someone to realize that something has happened or changed or that you have done something wrong. This quote makes a big impact on my life. Dickinson will always be remembered as one of the best American poets to ever live and her legacy will live on for many years to come.

Smoking Habits Free Essays

Substance Abuse Paper HCA 250 September 30, 2012 Substance Abuse Paper I topic I have chosen to discuss is about the dangers of smoking tobacco at young age into adulthood. Smoking Tobacco is the leading cause of premature death in smokers and it has been linked to death of non-smokers which is known as second-hand smoke. Just like Alcohol and drug abuse, smoking tobacco is used for many reasons for example simply being cool, to fit in, peer pressure, and my parents do it. We will write a custom essay sample on Smoking Habits or any similar topic only for you Order Now Now let’s discuss the reason why smoking tobacco is dangerous to the smokers and non-smokers. The reason for smoking is psychological, because the way smoking is glamorized in the movies and also in advertisements. This is not the real reason one chooses to smoke; the addiction is due to the nicotine which makes it hard to quit once one has started. One can overcome his or her addiction, when the psychological reasons for smoking are eliminated. The reasons people chose to start smoking tobacco was to show he or she is not timid or afraid, because his or her friends do it, to look cool, to act grown-up, sign of rebellion, parents are smokers, role models smoke, because of advertisement, for weight loss, and to reduce anxiety. The effects of smoking in the workplace can lead to unscheduled smoke breaks, absenteeism, involuntary smoking, second-hand smoke, higher insurance premiums, increased chances of lung cancer in non-smokers and smokers, heart disease in non-smokers and smokers, effects the fetus of a pregnant worker, and irritation of eyes, headaches, nasal discomfort, cough, sore throat, or sneezing. To help employees control his or her smoking habit should begin with restricting smoking in the workplace. By doing this it helps promote a healthy program in the workplace. Considering that exposure to tobacco smoke is a health hazard that many face on a daily basis. Therefore some would agree that this exposure should be addressed, therefore making it a workplace health program for all non-smoker and smokers. In order to help employees control his or her smoking habits is to introduce a smoking policy. When this policy is introduced it should be enforced at all times by smokers and backed by all employers and employees. A company can also help those who want to stop smoking by offering fitness and nutritional counseling, exercise classes, and organized sports activities. The relationship between mental health and tobacco can be good and bad. People with Schizophrenia and Bipolar Disorder receive a calming effect from the nicotine. Although nicotine provides a calming sensation short term, in the long term it can cause mental illness and other health issues. Some people begin to smoke because of depression, although once he or she try to quit they are likely to experience an episode of major depression. One can also experience insomnia, irritability, frustration, anger, anxiety, difficulty concentrating, decreased heart rate, increased appetite, and weight gain. In conclusion smoking tobacco can cause serious damage to every organ in one’s body. It is very harmful to the lungs and the cardiovascular system, this becoming the leading cause of premature death in smokers. It also causes other diseases such as: heart disease, lung cancer, emphysema, peptic ulcer disease, and a stroke. References Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. (1991, June). People mainly buy clothes before any big festival, like before Christmas or before the new-year. During this period, the role of industry becomes vital. They try to outsmart each other by new business plans. Billabong Retail is coming up with innovations to live up the expectations of the consumers. Some people look for benefit from the product. Billabong Retail needs to organize detailed plans for these customers. It can be the quality of the service, product life of the item. Different people have different usage rate. Some of them enter the retail store for individual plans if that is fulfilled they opt out. Billabong Retail is giving personalized executives, recruiting best supervisors t o sort out these things. Marketing Mix Marketing mix models are used to analyze data from a wide variety of resources like shipment data, retailer scanning documents, pricing, promotion spending data, media. It is useful for understanding the effects of marketing. It is equally important in this industry so that the companies petting up with each other can know how to grow better than the competitors can. It is a tool to understand the competitive advantage (Holtzhausen et al. 2013). The marketing mix is intended at the positioning of the product or service it is targeted towards to customer. There are five branches in marketing mix model. Product, Price, Place, People and promotion are known as the five Ps of marketing. It can be a very useful in directing to the segmentation. The product is the first and primary parameter. The product should be targeted in a way so that it can attract the four segments. It plays a role in psychological, behavioral, demographic and geographic natures of the human. A product or service should check all these parameters. People like Brett Lee, Harry Kewell, Tim Cahill, Leyton Hewitt, Nick Kyrgious, Bernard Tomic is making the retail organization even more familiar with the mass. Promotions are directed towards festivals and events. Big Bash, AFL is the two events where the most Australian goes. These sporting events are the target market for Billabong Retail. They are using Banners, Hoardings, electronic billboards, digital ads that are playing an enormous role in their brand identity. The place is the one area where all company targets. Billabong Retail has introduced a Pan-Australian approach. Many branches have been opened in recent times. Every locality, be it urban or rural has, at least, one fitness center. Results are showing that around 206 stores Billabong Retail has opened hubs. Twenty thousand new memberships have been done, and more than 5,000 Australians have renewed their membership in the last couple of years. The newest trends are fast catching the imagination of the audience (Cardinal and Cardinal 2015). People are the last parameter. Different individual has different perspective, taste and behavior. Geographical and demographic backgrounds vary person to person. Billabong Retail has recruited executives who are not only educated but humble and polite too. Firm like Billabong Retail has put a lot of emphasis on customer service and customer-centric approach. People from the Chinese background and Japanese want the trainers who are friendly and co-operative. Billabong Retail is making centers in ten Oceania countries. Recommendation Estimating the market: Proper market research is necessary for evaluation any decision. Billabong Retail can get an idea where they are lacking. The quality of equipment: People first get attracted to instruments. The rising cost of the fitness hubs needs to be responded by maximizing the available materials. Workforce: Skill Management, Behavioral management, time management training should be given to the sales persons and employees. Techniques: Billabong Retail needs to apply the modern techniques to the clients. The product should be targeted in a way so that it can attract the four segments. It plays a role in psychological, behavioral, demographic and geographic natures of the human. A product or service should check all these parameters. Cyber

Cyber-Crime is a Serious Problem Essay Millions of people around the world use computers and the internet every day. We all use it in school, work even at home, computers have made us life easier, it has brought so many benefits to the society but it has also brought some problems and cybercrimes is one of them. â€Å"The times have really changed,† said Greg Garcia, the department’s assistant secretary for cyber security and communications. â€Å"We’re seeing now phishing, farming, botnets †¦ war dialing and domain server spoofing. And we’re seeing coordinated cyber-attacks against nation states.† (Fowler 5) Cybercrime is one of the most prevalent and most popular rising crimes being committed today. This is criminal activity done using computers and the Internet. There are millions victims around the world everyday who face these problems. Most people become victims of these at one time or another, but there are ways to avoid or deal with cybercrime by protecting yourself appropri ately. I also was one of those victims who faced a similar problem. This unfortunate truth forces me to understand that computers and the Internet have made our lives easier in many ways. However, it is unfortunate that people also use these technologies to take advantage of others through identity theft, hacking attempts, and malicious use of software. To be able to understand cybercrimes we need to know where it started. It all started with the birth of the internet. In the late 1960s, one of the authors (HMD) was a graduate student at MIT. His research at MIT’s project MAC (now the Laboratory for computer – the home of the World Wide Web Consortium) was funded by APRA – the Advanced Research Projects Agency of the Department of Defense. Later on APRA proceeded to implement the APRANET, which eventually developed into today’s Internet. At the beginning Internet was limited to universities and research institutions later time the military began using the Internet. Eventually, the government decided to allow access to the Internet for commercial purposes; however it doesn’t stop there businesses rapidly realized that Internet can boost up their business where they provide better services for their clients. The result is that bandwidth on the Internet has increased tremendously and costs have decrea sed significantly. Now days we can’t imagine life without Internet because it makes our daily work easier. According to P.J. Deitel and H.M. Deitel â€Å"The Internet and the web are surely among humankind’s most profound creations† (Deitel 11). As the Internet increased access to increasing numbers of systems worldwide, criminals used unauthorized access to poorly protected systems for vandalism, political action and financial gain (Internet World Wide Web : How to Program). Identity theft via cybercrime is one of the fastest growing crimes in America, costing billions of dollars each year. Identity theft is a form of theft in which the targets are bank accounts, credit cards, debit cards, social security numbers and information that is linked to a persons identity. Identity theft is the worst of the cybercrimes against individuals. Moreover, it is not just a person who has high credit score need to be worry about it. According to Federal Trade Commission estimates (FTC) â€Å"more than four hundred thousand children have their identity stolen every year† (17). People who involved these kinds of cybercriminals they often obtain access to their birth certificates and run up debts in their names. The victims normally do not know anything about it until they denied for employment, student loans, or find themselves unable to get driver licenses because somebody already using their social security number. Sometimes even those innocent people get arrest ed for those crimes which they never committed. The FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigation) has over 1,600 active investigations which are somehow related with identity theft. According to FBI, they opened 1,081 investigations related to identity theft in 2003, and 889 in 2004. Some of these cases are still pending to solve. I am already a victim of identity theft. I moved here in 2005 from Canada. I went to buy a car in 2007, and they told me need to run my credit history before they can approve me for car loans. I never obtain my credit history before that, so I never know what is in my record. According to loan officers after run my credit history they found out I have one collection accounts on my record. I was really surprised and stunned what they are talking about I have no idea at all. They explained to me a debt collection is one of the worst entries on your credit report. Later, they found more information about this account and it was Visa credit card account from Bloomingdales and it was surprised me when they told me somebody opened this account in 2004. I was not even here around that time. After long investigation I found out somebody might be still my identity from Canada and they used it in USA. After long investigation they remove it from my credit report finally in 2006. It took almost one year to remove all those from my record and it’s disappointed me a lot. Before this incident occurred I heard about identity theft but never realized that I have to such a big price one day in my life. I learned important many important lessons through this whole process. I have found that in identity theft cases the burden of proving innocence rests on the shoulders of the victim. Athens And Sparta: Similarities And Differences EssayThe Internet has brought enormous changes and benefits to the way organizations can do business and interact with other businesses, people, and government authorities. Each of us is confronted with cyber technologies every day in our life. It can be iPhone, GPS for driving direction or a computer. Those technologies have opened up opportunities that would be unthinkable without those. While progress has brought about many good things, the ease and accessibility of the Internet has also brought with it some concerning and serious disadvantages. Many of those disadvantages directly affect our children, our privacy, our Identity, and even threat to our nation. According to Cyber-crime people can commit a crime in the US while people sit comfortably in their apartment in China. However, Cyber-crime is only important to a few people, but I believe it should be important to everyone. If we become aware of the dangers of being online, t he dangers will slowly disappear. If everyone watches out for viruses, they will not spread nearly as far or fast as they currently do. We don’t want to all those benefits which I mentioned earlier come risks. Therefore, this is time to work everybody together to prevent this problem. The Odyssey and Lysistrata Lust Essay Example For Students

The Odyssey and Lysistrata Lust Essay Lust is defined as an intense longing or a sexual desire. It is a common theme in literature; particularly in classic Greek literature. The reason it is so prevalent in literature is that is prevalent in our daily lives. Everyone lusts after something or someone. It is an interesting topic to examine closely, and classic literature is an excellent medium for such an investigation. Two works I have studied, in which lust is a theme, are an epic, Homers The Odyssey, and a play, Aristophanes Lysistrata. In both The Odyssey and Lysistrata, lust is a theme that plays a major role in the course of the story, making the stories similar, but very different. We will write a custom essay on The Odyssey and Lysistrata Lust specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now The Odyssey is an epic that tells story of Odysseus as he returns to his home and his wife after fighting in the Trojan War. He is faced with many perils, trials, and tribulations along the way. One such trail is lust. It shows up in two instances in The Odyssey. One such instance occurs in Book X on the island of Circe, and the other notable instance occurs in Book XII on Calypsos island of Ogygia. In Book X, Odysseus and his men find themselves on the island of the sorceress, Circe. The men hear her singing and are overcome with lust for her. They say, There is some one inside working at a loom and singing most beautifully. The whole place resounds with it. Let us call her and see whether she is woman or goddess, (The Odyssey). Circe transforms Odysseuss men into swine. and when they had drunk she turned them into pigs by a stroke of her wand, and shut them up in her pigsties. They were like pigshead, hair, and all, and they grunted just as pigs do; but their senses were the same as before, and they remembered everything, (The Odyssey). It is up to Odysseus to save them. He does this with the help of the god Hermes, but is tricked into remaining on the island for a number of years without even realizing it. Circe says to him, so be it then; sheathe your sword and let us go to bed, that we may make friends and learn to trust each other, (The Odyssey). He is reluctant, but finally consents. He thinks he is only there overnight. However, he does not realize how long he is actually on the island until the time has passed. Then, it is too late. Odysseus stays on the island because of a mutual lust between him and Circe. Odysseus loves his wife, Penelope, deeply, but is overcome by his lust for Circe. The reason Circe holds Odysseus captive on her island for so long is her lust for him. She is certainly not in love with him, but she wants him. Thus, she makes the time pass very quickly so that Odysseus will stay with her. The second instance of lust occurs in Book XII when Odysseus is washed up on the island of Ogygia, after just barely surviving the perils of Scylla and Charybdis. His whole crew has perished, and he is alone. He is found by Calypsos handmaidens. At first Calypso treats Odysseus well. However, when Odysseus asks for a boat to leave the island, Calypso tells him that he may never leave the island. Calypso lusts for Odysseus so much that she holds him captive for many years. Odysseus, however, does not feel this lust for her. At this point in the epic, he wants nothing more than to reach his home and his wife, whom he loves very much. Finally, the gods tell Calypso that is time to release Odysseus, and she obeys. .u795efa4dc31751dafed1890aab7b5a80 , .u795efa4dc31751dafed1890aab7b5a80 .postImageUrl , .u795efa4dc31751dafed1890aab7b5a80 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u795efa4dc31751dafed1890aab7b5a80 , .u795efa4dc31751dafed1890aab7b5a80:hover , .u795efa4dc31751dafed1890aab7b5a80:visited , .u795efa4dc31751dafed1890aab7b5a80:active { border:0!important; } .u795efa4dc31751dafed1890aab7b5a80 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u795efa4dc31751dafed1890aab7b5a80 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u795efa4dc31751dafed1890aab7b5a80:active , .u795efa4dc31751dafed1890aab7b5a80:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u795efa4dc31751dafed1890aab7b5a80 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u795efa4dc31751dafed1890aab7b5a80 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u795efa4dc31751dafed1890aab7b5a80 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u795efa4dc31751dafed1890aab7b5a80 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u795efa4dc31751dafed1890aab7b5a80:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u795efa4dc31751dafed1890aab7b5a80 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u795efa4dc31751dafed1890aab7b5a80 .u795efa4dc31751dafed1890aab7b5a80-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u795efa4dc31751dafed1890aab7b5a80:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: The Cay EssayThe Odyssey is a tale of growth and development. Odysseus was, in a sense, defeated by the power of Circe. However, later in the story, as he continued to grow and change, he was able to be strong when faced with Calypso. He did not forget his goal of getting home as he had previously done. The comedy, Lysistrata, is based almost entirely around the theme of lust. The story tells of a war among the Greeks. Lysistrata, whose name means she who dissolves armies, is the wife of one of the soldiers. She, along with the other wives, is sick and tired of her husband always being away doing battle. In fact, she says to the women, Its your husbands. Fathers of your ch ildren. Doesnt it bother you that theyre always off with the Army? Ill stake my life, not one of you has a man in the house this morning, (Lysistrata). So, she comes up with a plan to end the war and have all the men return home. Her plan is to convince all the wives to withhold sex from their husbands until a treaty can be reached. She believes that the men will be so overcome with lust for their wives that they will come to an agreement and end the war. When Lysistrata first introduces her idea to the wives, she tells them, Only we women can save Greece! (Lysistrata). They are all very glad and excited to hear her plan. They claim they are willing to do anything that will bring the war to a close. However, when she tells them her plan, their tone changes. The women want their men just as much as the men want them. One womans response is, I couldnt. No. Let the war go on, (Lysistrata). Another woman says, Lysistrata, no! Id walk through fire for youyou know I would!, but dont ask u s to give up that! Why, theres nothing like it! (Lysistrata). But, eventually, Lysistrata manages to convince the women that this is the only way to end the war, and they reluctantly agree. Many of the women are weakened by their lust for their husbands. They try to make excuses in order to go home. One woman says, Ive got to get home! Ive a lot of Milesian wool, and the worms are spoiling it, (Lysistrata). Another woman goes so far as to put a helmet under her cloak and pretend she is about to have a child. However, Lysistrata responds to them by saying, You useless girls, thats enough: Lets have no more lying. Of course you want your men. But dont you imagine that they want you just as much? Ill give you my word; their nights must be pretty hard. Just stick it out! A little patience, thats all, and our battles won, (Lysistrata). And, Lysistrata is right; the men are weakening with their lust for their wives. They all echo the sentiments of this statement. Were at a standstill. Cant seem to think of anything but women, (Lysistrata). Eventually the men can no longer stand it, and they agree to make peace. Lysistrata and the women have won because of the power lust had over the men. When compared, The Odyssey and Lysistrata have one apparent similarity. That similarity is the power of lust. However, when the theme of lust in the two works is compared, one major difference can be seen. In The Odyssey, lust is conquered by Odysseus. In Lysistrata, lust is the conqueror. The Odyssey is an epic that shows Odysseus growth and development, as well as his strength to resist temptation. Lysistrata is a comedy that shows how weak men are when it comes to lust. Therefore, the two works have one basic similarity, but it is that very similarity that makes them very different. .u720146d7945efb0c6a69b950ffe24f2c , .u720146d7945efb0c6a69b950ffe24f2c .postImageUrl , .u720146d7945efb0c6a69b950ffe24f2c .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u720146d7945efb0c6a69b950ffe24f2c , .u720146d7945efb0c6a69b950ffe24f2c:hover , .u720146d7945efb0c6a69b950ffe24f2c:visited , .u720146d7945efb0c6a69b950ffe24f2c:active { border:0!important; } .u720146d7945efb0c6a69b950ffe24f2c .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u720146d7945efb0c6a69b950ffe24f2c { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u720146d7945efb0c6a69b950ffe24f2c:active , .u720146d7945efb0c6a69b950ffe24f2c:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u720146d7945efb0c6a69b950ffe24f2c .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u720146d7945efb0c6a69b950ffe24f2c .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u720146d7945efb0c6a69b950ffe24f2c .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u720146d7945efb0c6a69b950ffe24f2c .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u720146d7945efb0c6a69b950ffe24f2c:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u720146d7945efb0c6a69b950ffe24f2c .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u720146d7945efb0c6a69b950ffe24f2c .u720146d7945efb0c6a69b950ffe24f2c-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u720146d7945efb0c6a69b950ffe24f2c:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Hsc Visual Arts: Artists Who Use Bodily Fluids EssayIn conclusion, both Homers The Odyssey and Aristophanes Lysistrata contain the theme of lust. In The Odyssey, lust is overcome, and in Lysistrata, lust overcomes. The stories are linked by the idea of lust, but they are very different. I enjoyed reading both of these works, and I found it fascinating to examine them in regards to a topic that is so prevalent in todays society. It was interesting to take a look at these two tremendously different representations of the emotion of lust. These stories represented the extremes of this emotion, and I believe that most humans fall somewhere in the middle, sometimes giving into lust, and sometimes remaining strong. And let us all hope that, Never againshall we lose our way in such madness, (Lysistrata).
